Crisis States Programme in Colombia

In the current phase of research, the Crisis States Centre is working primarily with IEPRI at the Universidad Nacional in Bogota.   Research there is led by Dr Francisco Gutierrez.

The Instituto de Estudios Políticos y Relaciones Internacionales (Institute of Political Studies and International Relations - IEPRI)  was founded in 1986 with the aim of promoting "a sense of public consciousness around issues of peace, political democracy, and the strengthening of international links between Colombia and the rest of the world". The Universidad Nacional is a public but autonomous university, founded in 1867 and has campuses in six cities across the country. IEPRI is a research institute - although members are involved in teaching within the university - with a multidisciplinary academic staff of about 40 at any one time, made up of sociologists, political scientists, historians, anthropologists, economists, lawyers, and philosophers. There are a variety of ongoing research projects at the IEPRI which are directly relevant to the Crisis States Programme, including work on globalisation and its impacts in Latin America; democracy and violence in the Andean region; the socio-economic consequences of institutionalised crisis in Colombia; decentralisation and political violence; as well as on the nature of armed actors in the Colombian conflict.
