Alistair Berkley Memorial Seminar

'Media, the Law and Peacebuilding: From Bosnia and Kosovo to Iraq'

Friday, 21st May 2004

Event Programme

The LSE hosts an event every two years in memory of LSE student Alistair Berkley, who died in the Lockerbie bombing in December 1988.   The event aims to bring together the legal and development communities around issues of immediate public concern.

In 2004, the Crisis States Research Centre at DESTIN and the Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research have organised a seminar on the issues of media and peace building for which the keynote speakers are Simon Haselock and Nik Gowing.

Transcripts of contributions to this event can be viewed below. We are indebted to Nicole Stremlau, of the Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research, for all her hard work in preparing this transcript from the audio recordings of the event.

A report based on discussions at this event and on a workshop held in March 2005 was published in early 2006. 'Why Templates for Media Development do not work in Crisis States'

Welcoming Remarks: Tim Allen (DESTIN, LSE)

Nik Gowing: He was the main presenter on The World Today, and its predecessor NewsDesk, from 1996 to 2000.

Simon Haselock: Director of the Media Development Team of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. The CPA has been recognised by the United Nations Security Council as the temporary Authority in Iraq comprising “the occupying powers under unified command” and the Council has called on it to fulfil the responsibilities of occupying powers under international law.

James Putzel, Director, Crisis States Research Centre
Monroe Price, Director, Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research
Jonathan Steele, reported for The Guardian from Baghdad
Mark Thompson, author of Forging War
