Colombia

Crisis States research in Latin America is being led by Dr Francisco Gutierrez at IEPRI in Bogota.  The Instituto de Estudios Políticos y Relaciones Internacionales (Institute of Political Studies and International Relations - IEPRI) at the Universidad Nacional was founded in 1986 with the aim of promoting "a sense of public consciousness around issues of peace, political democracy, and the strengthening of international links between Colombia and the rest of the world". The Universidad Nacional is a public but autonomous university, founded in 1867 and has campuses in six cities across the country. IEPRI is a research institute - although members are involved in teaching within the university - with a multidisciplinary academic staff of about 40 at any one time, made up of sociologists, political scientists, historians, anthropologists, economists, lawyers, and philosophers.

With a background in political science and anthropology, Dr Gutierrez has contributed extensively to Phase One of the Crisis States Programme and is a member of the Centre's Executive Committee for Phase Two.   He will direct research on Colombia and Ecuador across all three themes of the current programme of research, including an analysis of international interventions and studies of urban armed conflict.
