Research in North East India

Apurba Baruah, Manorama Sharma, and Rajesh Dev - NEIDS, Shillong

A project on 'traditional' tribal political institutions and their relations with those of the Indian state. Manorama Sharma has carried out a historical investigation into the institution of the tribal 'dorbar', suggesting that this 'traditional' body is actually of quite recent invention, dating back probably no further than the beginning of the 20th Century. Baruah and Dev have carried out field studies of two dorbars in Meghalaya, one (Laitumkrah) in Shillong and the other (Nongkynrih), a rural dorbar located twenty five miles or so outside the city. These studies strongly suggest that the dorbars constitute an alternative structure which in important ways operates outside the rule of law of the state. Materials have been collected on studies of compliance and defiance, Mylliem Syiemship and on major youth movements in Meghalaya. Notes have been prepared on demographic changes and on the growth of literacy in Meghalaya.

The North Eastern Institute of Development Studies has recently launched a new academic journal: North East India Studies. Contributions and subscriptions are invited.
