Crisis States Programme Forum
American Imperialism

The promise of a more peaceful world, in the aftermath of the demise of the Soviet Union and, it was thought, with it, the race to produce increasing arsenals of nuclear weapons that could destroy the world several times over, seems to have evaporated. Instead, we find ourselves in a world marked by instability, many small areas of intense violent conflict, repeated and expensive military adventures conducted by some of the world’s richest countries in far-flung parts of the developing world, and a growing sense of insecurity with the rise of terrorist networks seemingly working on an international scale. At the same time, the United States has emerged as the world's single 'superpower', intent on asserting its planetary dominance.
